Tyler Perry born Emmitt Perry on September 14, 1969, was once the victim of poverty and physical abuse. Tyler Perry changed his first name due to the physical abuse relationship with his father Emmitt Perry. At age 16 Tyler Perry dropped out of school but later returned and obtained his GED.
At age 28, in 1992 Tyler Perry saved up $12,000 rented out a theatre in Atlanta
and wrote, directed, promoted and starred in his own production I Know I’ve Been Changed.
He spent all of his money but people never came.
After that Tyler Perry spent months sleepy in hotels and living out of his car.
He was jobless, homeless, and penniless.
One day in 1992, while Tyler Perry was watching The Oprah Winfrey Show, Perry took the advice that it can be cathartic to put feelings down on paper, which inspired him to write letters of his painful childhood. These letters eventually became his plays. This was Perry's first foray into writing, when he began keeping a journal, in part to cope with the repercussions of abuse. He developed different characters to voice different ideas in the journal.
Tlyer Perry has full ownership of his movies; Lionsgate Entertainment serves as his distributor. His first movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman , produced on a budget of $5.5 million, became an unexpected commercial success prompting widespread discussion among industry watchers about whether middle-class African-Americans were simply not being addressed by mainstream Hollywood movies. Its final gross box office receipts were $50.6 million.
Amoung the many movies that Tyler Perry has made two of his most recent movies and 2 of my favorite movies Daddy's Little Girls and the family that preys. Tyler Perry has come along way since his days of being homeless and sleeping in his car. Tyler Perry has become a successful film maker, director and producer.
